چکیده

The decentralization of industries and commercial activities has played an important role in the development of many cities in India. According to a report by Mckinsey Global Institute, by 2025 India will add 215 million people to its cities, whose population will account for 38 per cent of the country’s population. Urbanization of this magnitude will not only impact world economy but also the environment, with its ever growing been selected for the study. Secondary sources of data have been used for the year of 2001. Population for th urban population to total population, other variables such as, work participation rate, literacy rate, road density, urban dens find out the spatial variations in ur In 1991, there was only 10.8 per cent urban population in India, which increased up to 27.3 per cent in 2001. 49.77 per cent of its population living i (49.5 per cent), Tamil Nadu (43.86 per cent), Maharashtra (42.40 per cent) and Gujarat (37.35 per cent). These states recorded higher proportion of urban population than the national average. Uttar Pradesh with 20.78 the national average in urbanization. concentration of population in cities and towns depends on several factors, for instance the ecological setting, initial population size, economic structur functional characteristics, relationship with the hinterland, industrialization, employment opportunities, accessibility created by the new methods of transport and development in trade and commerce are some important factors which cause an overall urban growth of a region.
